This morning, join us for a guided tour of Doge's Palace and Saint Mark's Square. Let's set off on a guided visit of Venice: Saint Mark's Square and its famous basilica (exteriors only) and Doge's Palace (interior tour), the official residence of the Venetian government up to 1797. The current palace dates back to the 14th century and is considered one of the most luxurious in the world. You'll climb the infamous Golden Staircase to reach the apartment with masterpieces painted on the ceiling and magnificent stone fireplaces reflecting the lifestyle and atmosphere that reigned in these rooms for centuries. This afternoon: Hiking program: Hiking on the islands of Torcello and Lazzaretto Nuovo. We'll leave on a private boat for the islands. Our first stop will be Torcello, which contains artifacts of the first inhabitants in the lagoon. We can also find Byzantine ruins there, including the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, one of the most-ancient edifices containing the earliest mosaics in the area. Then we'll head to Lazzaretto Nuovo. Once abandoned, it has been entirely restored and is now the focus of archaeological research. This island represents an important natural and historical interest to the northern area of the lagoon. The name of the island comes from the word "lazaret", the former leper colonies and quarantine stations built for maritime travelers. (5-hour tour including 2.5 hours of hiking, 2.8 mi./4.5 km, no elevation gain). Non-hiking program: The Murano and Burano Islands. More than 31 miles long, the Venetian Lagoon is actually the estuary of three rivers and is separated from the Adriatic Sea by a fine sandbank. Venice is located in the middle of about 50 other islands. Almost half of these islands have been abandoned, but the two dominant islands to the north are Murano and Burano. Murano, known world-wide for its glass production, provides a fascinating look at this art. Burano is more down-to-earth; it's almost a sleepy fishing village with brightly painted homes. Known for its lace, it now boasts a school to help preserve the tradition.
We'll spend the morning cruising to Chioggia. This afternoon: Hiking program: Hiking the Wine Route through the Euganean Hills to the medieval village of Arquà Petrarca. The volcanic Euganean Hills rise above the plains below. You'll leave by coach to the hills, where you'll hike to Mount Calbarina (446 feet in altitude) to take in the magnificent view of the Lago della Costa. Your hike will continue through the forest to Mount Piccolo (1,037 feet in altitude). The trail ends up in the medieval village of Arquà Petrarca, one of the most beautiful hamlets in Italy, located at the foot of the Monte Piccolo and Monte Ventolone peaks. Petrarch, and Italian scholar and poet during the Renaissance and one of the earliest humanists, spent his last years in this tiny village. His remains are found in a tomb in front of the church. (An approximate 6 hour tour, with 2.5 hours hiking, 4.5 miles/7 km, and an elevation gain of 918 feet (280 m)) Non-hiking program: Tour of Padua, the city of Saint Anthony, medieval marketplaces, Fascist-era facades, and a hip student population. We'll leave by coach from Chioggia for Padua, where we'll first tour the city with our bus before stopping at the famous basilica dedicated to Saint Anthony. Begun in 1232, just one year after Saint Anthony's death, it is one of only eight international shrines recognized by the Holy See. After a visit of the center of the city on foot, enjoy some free time before returning to the ship. During this time, the ship will cruise to Taglio di Pô.(1) For passengers not participating in the excursions, a transfer will be available from Chioggia to Taglio di Pô. During the transfer, the coach will stop off in the charming village of Adria, where you can enjoy some free time before returning to the ship.
Enjoy breakfast on board this morning. Hiking program: Hike to the Pomposa Abbey (picnic lunch). You'll travel by coach to Goro, the starting point for today's hike. You'll walk along the Adriatic Sea in the Natural Mesola Forest Reserve before reaching the Oasi di Cannevié, a small salt water lagoon that includes a discovery trail. Enjoy your picnic lunch by the water. Afterward, you'll be transferred by coach to the Pomposa Abbey, one of the most important in northern Italy. A masterpiece of Romanesque art, the abbey's towering campanile can be seen from miles away. You'll return to ship by coach. (5-hour tour including 3 hours of hiking, 3.7 mi./6 km, no elevation gain). During this time, the ship will cruise to Polesella. After arriving, lunch will be served on board. Non-hiking programs: Discover the Tastes of Bologna. We'll leave by coach from Polesella for Bologna. Bologna is a university city known for its terracotta medieval buildings adorned with miles of porticoes. We propose an original tour of the city through discovery of the local delicacies. You guide will bring you to the Piazza Maggiore, an amazing patchwork of architecture and structures. Afterward, we'll head over to the famous "Quadrilatero" to browse the old medieval market. Here is where you'll discover all the various delicacies found in this eclectic city. At the Il Caffe' della Corte on the Piazza Santo Stefano, you'll be able to taste some of the local foods. Hikers will return on board in the afternoon, and non-hikers will return on board for dinner. We'll enjoy an evening of activities on board. (1)
This morning, join us for a guided tour of Ferrara. We'll set off with our guides for Ferrara, where we'll explore the city's medieval streets. We'll also visit the old Jewish Quarter, the cathedral, and the outside area of the Castello Estense. A panoramic tour of the city by coach will top off the visit. This afternoon, we'll visit Verona and its amphitheaters or the Giusti Gardens. We'll take a coach from Polesella to Verona, the city where Romeo and Juliet fell in love. There is even a house and balcony dedicated to the famous scene where Romeo promises his eternal love to Juliet in Shakespeare's famous tragedy. But Verona offers much, much more, including architectural, urban, and artistic wonders. On our list to see are the Castelvecchio, Arco dei Gav, and Porta Borsari. Your stroll will also take you to the Piazza delle Erbe, the former forum during the Roman Empire. It's a fantastic mix of Roman, medieval, and Renaissance styles. We'll also visit the amphitheater, which we know will leave a lasting impression. If the amphitheater is closed, and in July and August, we'll visit the magnificent Giusti Gardens. During this time, the ship will cruise to Chioggia.(1) If you haven't reserved an excursion for today, you can enjoy time on the ship as it cruises on the Pô. A transfer is also available, leaving from Porto Levante for Chioggia. This unpretentious fishing town has picturesque spots and a slower, more ordinary pace than Venice.
We'll arrive in Venice in the early morning. Enjoy breakfast on board. Hiking program: Urban hike in Venice, a great way to discover the little-known areas of this legendary city. Our hike will bring you to the Cannaregio neighborhood, after passing first through the Castello district. You'll discover hidden Venice in this old area, the heart of the city with a lively commercial district full of craftspeople. The old island in the middle is the ancient ghetto, the oldest in the world, where Jews were compelled to live for over three centuries. You'll then head to the Church of Madonna dell'Orto and the Santa Maria del Rosario, commonly known as I Gesuati, and the Fondamente Nove, where you'll have a great look out over the lagoon and the surrounding islands. (2.5 to 3 hours of hiking - 5 mi./8 km - elevation gain : none; several bridges will be crossed during the hike; we'll return on board our ship via public ferry). Non-hiking programs: We'll leave on foot for a tour on foot of the Castello district.(2) As we walk along the "calli", you'll get a real feel for Venice and its eternal beauty. We'll enjoy a guided visit of the several churches including Santa Maria Formosa, Santa Maria dei Miracoli, and the Basilica di San Giovanni e Paolo. On our way back, we'll pass in front of the Church of San Zaccaria, dedicated to the father of John the Baptist. The remains of several doges are buried in the crypt. Lastly, we'll see the church of Santa Maria della Pietà. (Please note: if the ship cannot tie up to the dock as expected, each passenger will need to pay the €20 round-trip ticket (2017 rate) for the vaporetto. To be paid for on board.) After our tour, we'll return on board for lunch. Enjoy some free time on your own in the city this afternoon. Tonight is our festive gala evening.
Enjoy breakfast on board this morning before disembarking at 9 a.m. End of our services.
